HOW TO MAKE CROCHET COASTERS
I got carried away with the yarn I had just bought and decided to play around with these gorgeous colours. so I made a few single crochet rounds and a few African hexagons. Using lovely reds, yellows, purples, mustards and oranges along with some luscious variegated yarn from Laura Kitting cotton.
Then …I thought ….how does one use these….the first thing that came into mind was …a bag esp with the hexagons…….and then I looked around and realised that I didn’t have a decent set of coasters so……that ‘s what I did with them.

For the pattern for the crochet round and hexagon motifs used here, Pls scroll down to the links at the bottom of the page.
To convert yarn based motifs into coasters…….First make sure you give the coasters a thick back so that the heat from a cup will not travel down onto the surface that you are trying to protect. I used an old plastic table mat for the backing. This idea was from a crochet pal of mine Sajjini Durairaj….and I must say that it is a stupendous one. In one shot you recycle plastic, protect your furniture and make something useful, gorgeous and economically viable….What more can you ask for?
Mark out your coasters on the table mat…I used an old bottle cover to draw out the circle and then cut it off. Then I cut out 2 pieces of fabric in a size 1″ larger than the plastic circles…… I then placed the right sides of the fabric facing each other. Marked out the edges and then sewed them together leaving enough gap to push the plastic circle in
Push in the plastic circle, then sew up the gap and hand sew the whole thing onto the back of the crocheted motif……..
