Crochet Chronicles

Butter was supposed to be a favorite of Baby Krishna’s….5000 years ago ..and even now in rural homes butter is often stored in earthenware pots hung from the ceiling. these are known as Hundis. I made two pots or urns or as we call them matches, that are kept on the floor cos for last time’s Janmashtami I had made a hundi.

(Suggestion..Do watch any Youtube tutorials on Tapestry crochet to get an idea on how to work the color changes)

Round 10: chain one up; change colour but do not cut away the brown yarn. work scs right around the circle.(48)

Round 11:  Now using the brown yarn ( but do not cut the ecru yarn)hook in 6 scs in the next 6 stitches. add in the ecru yarn and hook inn one sc. Again pull in the brown yarn and hook in 6 stitches. then hook in a sc using ecru. Continue until end.(48)

Round 12: Cut away the ecru -Using only brown form now on – chain one up; sc in each stitch until end of round. (48)

Now you need to decrease the pattern in order to get the narrow mouth of the matka.

Round 13: chain up ; sc in same stitch; 5 sc in next 5 stitches; *skip one stitch; 6 stitches in next  6 stitches*; ** until end ; ss.

Round 14: chain up ; sc in same stitch; scs in next 4 stitches; *skip one stitch; 5 stitches in next 5 stitches*; ** until end ; ss.

Round 15: chain up ; sc in same stitch; 3 scs in next 3 stitches; *skip one stitch; 4 stitches in next 4 stitches*; ** until end ; ss.

Round 16: chain up ; sc in same stitch; 2 scs in next 2 stitches; *skip one stitch; 3 stitches in next 3 stitches*; ** until end ; ss.

The next two rounds will make the rim of the mouth of the pot….
